Denneroll: A Simple Tool for Improving Neck Position

If you spend a lot of time at a desk, looking at screens, or simply find that your head tends to sit forward of your shoulders, you may have heard of a Denneroll.

We now have Dennerolls back in stock at Mend Chiropractic, so we thought it was a good opportunity to explain what they are, how they’re used and who they may be suitable for.

What is a Denneroll?

A Denneroll is a firm, curved support designed to provide a gentle, sustained stretch to the neck when used in a recommended position.

Rather than being something you actively exercise with, the Denneroll provides passive support while you lie on it. With regular use, it can be used as part of a home-care program aimed at encouraging improved neck position and posture.

Dennerolls are commonly used in care for forward head posture, where the head sits further forward in relation to the shoulders.

For people who spend much of their day working at a computer or looking down at a phone, incorporating appropriate home care can be a useful way of continuing to work on neck position between appointments.

How does a Denneroll work?

The Denneroll’s curved shape provides support underneath the neck while you lie in a specific position.

The aim is to provide a gentle, sustained stretch rather than forcefully moving the neck.

The amount of stretch you experience will depend on factors such as your individual neck shape, flexibility and the Denneroll size being used. That’s why it’s important to use the correct size and follow the recommended positioning and instructions.

Which Denneroll is right for you?

We currently have two Cervical Denneroll sizes available at Mend Chiropractic:

Medium (White)
Generally recommended for average-sized adults, people around 173 cm (5’8”) and under, or those with more limited neck flexibility.

Large (Grey)
Generally designed for taller adults around 175 cm (5’9”) and above, or people who already have greater neck flexibility.

There can be some overlap between these recommendations, so height isn’t the only factor to consider.

Using a Denneroll as part of your home care

A Denneroll is a simple tool that can allow you to continue working on your neck position at home between chiropractic appointments.

As with any home-care exercise or support, the goal isn’t simply to do more. The positioning, duration and frequency should be appropriate for you and your individual needs.

If you’re new to using a Denneroll, we’d recommend discussing it with your chiropractor so you can make sure you’re using it correctly.
